Trash & Recycling

Service: Patriot Disposal collects trash in front of your property on Tuesdays and Fridays. Recycling is picked up weekly on Wednesday. Yard debris is picked up weekly on Tuesday. Starting July 1st 2020, only trash or recycling inside a Toter will be picked up. Any trash or recycling outside of the containers will not be picked up. For detailed information about Patriot Disposals' recycling program visit their web page here. The recycling page contains a list of items that are recyclable. According to Patriot Disposal's notice, beginning on November 11th 2019, glass is not permitted to be included as recycling. Recycling that contains glass will be considered contaminated and will not be picked up. If you still wish to recycle glass, you can deliver used glass containers to purple, glass-only recycling containers; there are now 21 purple containers available, and more sites are being evaluated to make dropping off glass more convenient. All colors of clean glass bottles and jars are accepted in the purple containers. Glass items not accepted include lamps, light bulbs, ceramics, porcelain, mirrors, windows, and sheet glass. COVID-19 Update from Patriot Disposal:

[2020-05-13] Effective May 18th, Patriot Disposal will resume regular yard waste and bulk/special item collections. Please refer to Patriot Disposal's Notice for details. 

[2020-04-01]  Trash outside of the container, including bagged trash, will not be collected. Trash that does not fit in the container should instead be placed into the container for collection on the 2nd pick-up day of the week. Please refer to this updated notice for details.

[2020-04-01] Patriot Disposal will temporarily suspend the collection of yard wastes from all Fairfax County residential customers, effective immediately. Please refer to this notice for details. Please also check their COVID-19 page for any new update.

Don't Throw it Away!

If you have something that you no longer want or need but may be of value to someone else consider the following options:

  • Consider making a charitable donation. The Charitable Donations page lists many local options.
  • Join the Vienna-McLean chapter of Freecycle where you can post a description of the item you are trying to get rid of to our neighboring communities.
  • Advertise on craigslist to find people in the greater Washington DC area who may take or buy your "junk"
  • eBay is always an option.
  • Take your used childrens clothes, strollers, toys to Paddington Station, a consignment shop in Vienna.
  • Organize a neighborhood yard sale!

Trash & Recycling Details

Do not put your trash or recycling out before dusk the night before collection. We recommend that you put out your trash no later than 6:00am on collection day. Remember to store all trash and recycling containers out of sight by the end of the collection day.

 

Company Policy: All trash must be placed in a standard covered trash cans or in heavy-duty plastic trash bags, secured tightly, and placed at the curb for collection. Containers cannot weigh more than 50 lbs. or they will not be emptied.  The following items should NOT be placed in containers or bags at any time: rocks, concrete, dirt, soil, sod, tree stumps, construction debris, brick, or landscaping timbers.  Collection of these items may be provided for an additional charge. customer service at 703-257-7100.


County Regulations: The following items will NOT be collected: liquids of any kind, asbestos, ammunition, fuel tanks, hazardous, radioactive, infectious or medical waste, petroleum contaminated soil, dead animals, manure, dangerous acids, caustics, explosives, or other dangerous material or items too large or too heavy to be loaded safely into the collection vehicles.


Yard Debris: Yard debris is defined as grass clippings, leaves and hedge trimmings.  Yard debris must be placed at the curb in bags (paper is preferred), or in a separate container clearly marked "yard waste" Brush must be less than 4? in diameter, cut into 4' lengths, and tied in small bundles or bagged. Yard debris does not include stumps, whole trees, or clean-up form storm damage. Collection of these items may be provided for an additional charge.


Containers: All residents should have been provided with a 64 gallon trash can and either a 16 or 64 gallon recycling bin/can when Patriot Services began service in the neighborhood in November 2014. Residents in need of a replacement trash can or recycle bin should call (703-257-7100) or e-mail Patriot Disposal to order one. As of November 2014 trash containers are available for a one-time rental fee of $25.00 each and recycling bins are available for a one-time rental fee of $10.00 each.


Special Items: Special items will be collected weekly. Special items include appliances, small furniture, small electronics, mattresses, and other large items. Advance notice is required for the collection of all special items, except for small furniture and mattresses, which can be placed at the curb with the regular trash. 

Up to two special items per residence per pickup will be collected at no additional charge. Additional items, or items that are extremely large or heavy, will be collected for a minimum fee of $25.00, including TVs or monitors larger than 19?, tires, construction debris, carpeting, etc. Special items scheduled for pickup that are not out on the scheduled pickup day will be re-scheduled for pickup at the request of the homeowner for a $25.00 fee.  All fees for special pickups must be prepaid by the homeowner prior to removal.


Holidays:  Service will be provided on all holidays except for Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year?s Day.  When a designated collection day falls on one of these holidays, service will resume on the next regularly-scheduled collection day. Inclement Weather: In the event that inclement weather prevents Patriot Disposal from providing service on a regularly-scheduled collection day, service will resume on the next regularly-scheduled collection day, road conditions permitting.

Road Conditions: Patriot Disposal will not provide services for any homes located on roads that are deemed impassable due to construction, construction vehicles, parked cars, or other obstructions or conditions.  Uncollected items will be removed on the next regularly-scheduled collection day, road conditions permitting.

The City of Falls Church and Fairfax County periodically host electronic waste disposal events. Best Buy also recycles most electronics and electronics related equipment including electrical cords and CDs and a host of other miscellaneous items.
